SANTAREM

High on a plateau, Santarém is a viewpoint over the fertile region of the Lezíria, the Tagus River valley known for agriculture, cattle raising and bullfighting.

Santarém is a journey through Portuguese Gothic, which evolved into the Manueline inspiration of the Church of Nossa Senhora de Marvila, with an exemplary tile covering, from the 19th century. XVII. In the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça, we have the flaming Gothic. Inside, we find the tomb of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the discoverer of Brazil. Next door, we can visit Casa do Brasil, which belonged to the family of this great figure in Portuguese history.

The meeting point to start your visit to Santarém is normally the Jardim das Portas do Sol, the fortress of the old castle that D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, took the Moors by surprise during a night climb in 1147. the landscape of this natural viewpoint, where the UrbiSacallabis Interpretation Center is located, we can then explore the city.
