GERÊS

The Peneda-Gerês National Park, in the extreme northwest of Portugal, between Alto Minho and Trás-os-Montes, is the only Portuguese protected area classified as a National Park.

It is a world apart in which human activity is harmoniously integrated into Nature, preserving very old values and traditions, clearly evident in the community villages of Pitões das Júnias e Tourém.

In all shades of green, the exuberant vegetation includes a holly forest, unique at national level, and endemic species such as the Gerês lily, which brightens the fields with its blue-violet tones. In the Serras da Peneda, Soajo, Amarela e Gerês, which are part of the Park, rivers and streams flow that rush into waterfalls and then spill into reservoirs. The landscapes are stunning.
